Default A new face!

Hi all,

A few months back I had posted a carving I did of a salesman. Never was too crazy about his head and face, but didn't know what to do about it.

Been working on faces and decided to give this guy a new one.

Here's a before and after....he may still be homely, but he's better.

(The new and improved guy looks a bit more yellow. Sorry the photos aren't better)

Mike

Mike,
I've never been to crazy about ANY salesman's face! And I was one for several years! I think you really captured what people see in a door to door salesman! He's obviously thinking fast (the eyes) and talking out the side of his mouth! HA! It's a great carving! Good work!
The sign of a really great salesman is his ability to not show what he's thinking or even THAT he's thinking, and learning to disguise the mouth, forcing it to let you talk out the middle rather than the side!
You really did a great job! I'm completely serious when I say that!
Wade

I like the first one just fine, but the second one does appear to be an improvement. Good job!
I didn't know all of that about salesmen. I don't see very many. I guess I had better watch more closely.

I agree with wade and like the first head/face even though the second one is good also. To me the first one you carve shows the saleman's expression the best.

Thanks for the comments. The pictures are not very good so it's hard to see the differences in the photos.

Basically, in the first picture the head was too big and the shape wasn't right. It was fairly square with rounded corners. The nose and mouth seemed to be just kind of stuck on the head instead of being part of the head. The ears also appeared to be stuck on the side and out of place...even for a caricature.

I think the biggest thing the book helped me with was getting the head laid out so that the features could be carved as part of the head instead of looking like add-ons.
