Gary, Emil was a well respected painter of still life as well as a carver but it looks like he really liked to use anyline dyes on his carvings for color.

This link will take you to a beautiful slide show of allot of his carvings. You will see how he used stains. Beautiful work for sure ;o) Mike

Mike, Keep the chips flying. I have enough problems with my own style to try someone elses. I really like the caricature and Like the vest buckle in back.

Most "hillbilly" hounds appear the be howling at the moon or a raccoon or maybe he isn't getting his share of the moonshine. Maybe you can come up with another angle with the hound or hounds. Waiting to see a picture of one of yours.

Thanks for posting this! Seeing the colored versions of these carvings is tremendous. Almost like some of the figures are going to start walking on their own!

Very nice work, Mike, I agree with Gary, if you're this good already I can't imagine how good you'll be by the time you do your twentieth! Great job, thanks for sharing him with us! Callynne

Thank you Callynne. Hope I have time to do another one soon. I'm thinking about useing wet wood just like I use for carving my wood spirit walking staffs.

It sure makes carving nice with much less chipping. Maybe that's why Emil liked to carve wet and green wood so much. Mike

Hi!

My name is Jonas Johansson, and I´m from Orsa, Sweden. I registered here just to say that it´s lovely to see the respect you´re paying to my great grandmothers brother.

I never met Emil myself, but my grandma remembers him quite well. She also has a couple of carvings from the time before he went overseas.

I´m a huge fan of Emil myself, and I think it would be great to show off the carvings we (grandma) have for all you Janel fans overseas someday. Maybe I should write an article?

Jonas,

Thank you for replying. The work of Mr. Janel is greatly admired by many of the caricature carvers today. We'd love to see a few pictures AND have an article.

Do you carve also?

Again, thanks for joining in.

Jonas, It's been a while since I have been on here due to some thumb problems keeping me from carving for a time. I'm doing fine now and was very happy to see a post from someone related to such a great artist.
I sure wish I could have watched him work or just to sit and talk to him.
If you ever get a chance to post pictures of the carvings your Grandmother has we would all love to see more of his work. If you ever write anything about Emil please us know. Thank you , Mike

Mitchell:

I do not carve myself, no, but I´m a trained cabinet maker. I even somehow managed to get a journeymans certificate, so I guess it´s in the genes in someway or another :-) I don´t work in that area any longer though, but I have a small shop for sparetime woodorking. The shop, by the way, is at my grandmothers house i Hansjö, a small village just outside Orsa. The same village Emil came from.

Did you know that Emil had a brother, Oscar Nygårds, who was almost as good in carving as Emil? Grandma has a brilliant carving by Oscar. A portrait of my great grandfather. The similarity with the "original", I must say, is strikingly well.

I would love to do an article on Emil. I think I do have one or two stories from his younger days in Sweden you´ve never heard before. And of course I would love to share pictures of the carvings with you over there. Of course along with the carving made by Oscar (perhaps together with an explanation why my great grandfather is wearing socks on his hands on that carving ;-) It would be a great opportunity for me to update my knowledge in the english language as well. I´ll see what I can do.

Hey Mike! Carve the Wood! Not your thumbs! ;-)
