| | I never carved a roughout but Jim Oh did in an email i received this link to the other magazine, Jim oh and i had been discussing rough outs,
he ask had i ever carved a rough out,
i said no and in a couple days i received a link to a article and photo essay on how to from jim.
the step by step photo essay shows the production of the steps preformed and it dose give you the idea of how its done,
i love these kind of how to's because the work from step to step can be compared (something most interested folks do anyway) this how to is not cluttered up with lots of big words and most guys will like it..

I emailed them and asked about any patterns that they might sell but was advised by Vicki that individual carving infomration only comes when you attend one of their classes or purchase one of their roughouts. I don't deny their right to make a living or the uniqueness of their work but the cost of purchasing roughouts is a little steep for my retired pocketbook.

| | Re: I never carved a roughout but Jim Oh did Eddy made a good point about expense and being on fixed income, i find desirable rough outs a bit out of my reach for a single project,
but im old school. still thinking i want to carve this daffy dill charter without just stealing the idea, somewhere in the conversation with jim about the rough out for daffy dill as it turns out to be, it is a (Ronnie Reed roughout)
carved by phil bishop <link> 'at $800 bucks for the finished carving' i thought phil must have liked this carving much more than me, heck i would do the same if it was mine, its great but far from my financial reach,
I'm interested because the face favors my sister-in-law, i wanted to carve it for her for the fun of it,
daffy dill is a great carving it depicts a middle age woman worn from hard work, wearing a flower sack apron, sagging from to many children and time was wearing her out in her current lifestyle depicted to be as thread bare rags, bare foot and possibly pregnant, she would fit into just about any hills or hillbilly scene, she has a look of beauty in her face, well carved and painted. great job phil..
investigating deeper into possibility's of carving this caricature jim said it was a ronnie reed rough out of Anna Canatuna rough out or anna wanna last looks close to same just not as detailed.
now the decision is do i spend as much on a rough out as i would spend on enough basswood for a years carving,
thanks jim for the effort in showing your carving of a rough out and adding to my dilemma,, |

| | Re: I never carved a roughout but Jim Oh did Sorry, If I had read the write up that Jim gave I would have known it was a Bishop roughout of Itchy. Guess that is what I get for not reading and just looking at the pictures.
Anyway, Thomp, I waste more money in chips than what a roughout cost. But understandable about the cost of roughouts also.
Knowing you, You will find a way to carve Daffy Dill.
Best to you and thanks again to you and Jim. |

| | Re: I never carved a roughout but Jim Oh did Hi Thomp,
Glad to help create another dielmma. LOL ;O). This was a fun project and with Phil and Vicli's guidance it was completed a lot faster than it would have been had I been carving it by myself! Thanks Kenny, Eddy, Myron and Theo for taking a look. Thomp, brfore I would spend that much money on a roughout, I believe I would make up a few practice sticks and see if you can carve a womans face. Most of the female faces I carve look like geezers and I don't think you want to spend that kind of money without a little insurance.
Just a thought.

But again, I am betting Thomp will "Git'er Done" |
