| | Natural Wood Finish (i.e. Kaisersatt) Hi all,
Marv K. tends to leave a lot of his carvings unpainted.
Does anyone know what type of finish is applied?
Thanks,
Mike |

| | Re: Natural Wood Finish (i.e. Kaisersatt) ...not too sure on this one as you will notice that all of his carvings do not have any shininess to them indicative of a sealer...i wonder if he just uses a matte finish poly? (that would be my guess) |

| | Re: Natural Wood Finish (i.e. Kaisersatt) Marv is one of the few carvers that can enter a natural piece in competition. Here in the East you will seldom get past third place unless it is painted. Big Al

| | Re: Natural Wood Finish (i.e. Kaisersatt) What a shame as wood in its natural state is prettier than painted. Well to me it is. I use to not paint as I was trying to carve the old fashioned way like our forefathers did. However, I do paint some carings but like the natural form or state of the carving. Paint hides to much even with washes. Oh well, JMHO. |

| | Re: Natural Wood Finish (i.e. Kaisersatt) I can tell you about a dozen things he doesn't use. Have been trying to duplicate his finish for quite awhile. The closest I've been able to come is mineral oil folowed by minwax, but that wasn't right either. My next attempt is going to be blo with a tad of burnt sienna. Got to get info town and get the paint first. Might be awhile 'cause the fish are bitin' and ain't got the time. |

| | Re: Natural Wood Finish (i.e. Kaisersatt) POE...be careful not to add too much paint to the mix (as I did) a little will go a long way (and I do mean a little...)
I liked the finish it produced, highlights the grain quite nicely.
Still I don't think he uses this...his carvings appear to light colored...maybe he just uses straight BLO... |

| | Re: Natural Wood Finish (i.e. Kaisersatt) Boy Howdy on the little dab'll do yuh ... found that out with burnt umber ... I really like the effect of whatever Kaisersatt uses. I'll finger it out one of these days,,,,maybe! I even went so far as to try and buy one of his carvings. My bank roll just didn't stretch far enough, had to bail out of the bidding at $750 which was about half of what it went for.

| | Re: Natural Wood Finish (i.e. Kaisersatt) Hi all,
In my search for a clear finish, I decided to try something.
I had a can of clear "wipe-on" polyurethane around from when I did some trim work in the house. I tried a little sample piece and it wasn't too bad.
Definitely didn't create a glossy, plastic looking finish but yet there seemed to be some protection. It also didn't seem to affect the color. I did two coats on the sample piece and was satisfied enought to try it on my latest piece. I just did the first coat and so far so good.
I'll let you know how it turns out and may even post a picture. I'm hoping it works...the stuff is real easy to work with.
