It probably is good practice. I went in entirely the opposite direction though, as you'll see from my posts! I started on a spoon (more like a dugout canoe with a large handle!), went on to do a santa, then a woodspirit folowed by 2 different knotwork designs.

Then again, it has been said that I never take the easy way

noshtero,

these are great for your first, and you have gotten some good advice already, deepen the cuts and round more will be of help, also what i see on the painting is to remove all saw marks before painting, wash carving with soap and brush and paint wet and let dry, also the paint could be alittle thinner, the flesh could be a little thinner as could the hat color but your white is pretty good as you want that to be a little thicker, painting is like the carving you have to play with it to get it the way you want it. hope this helps if you need any help just hollar.

I also think you did a great job on your first carvings. I have done about 20 so far for the wife and she still wants more.Mine are square not triangled and I have added pointed ears for elves and I see one person is making a witch lots of places to go. I recently bought a set of
dockyard gouges from little shavers and they are a great help for the beards. They also have a free pattern for a santa ornament that is fun to do and a free pattern for a pine cone ornament that I'm working on. Just mentioned them in case you are looking for some a little different

Little Shavers pinecone is next on my list! I got all my tools from Little Shavers. They were extremely helpful, and the tools are wonderful.

For your first carvings .. I can see your on your way to bigger and better things .. you did good and take Tiom"s suggestion .. deeper cuts can bring that expression out more ..

If I'm not mistaken, I believe I watched your tutorial on the 5-min wizard on youtube. That was an amazing help. You'd go "You see what I'm doing right there?" and I'd be like "Yep Gene, I'm trying to do it to, but it's not quite working out for me like it is for you!"

After I crank out a few more of these wizards, and maybe a pinecone or two from Rick and Little Shavers, I'm thinking about grabbing one of the rough outs of the hillbilly from Mike Shipley and having a go at that.

Yes Gene does make it look easy. I would not have started this if it was not for his videos.
