| | My First Cowboy Recently I visited a old friend that I hadn't seen in quite a few years and while we were talking .. he ask me if I remember a cowboy I gave him many years ago ...
I hate to say it , but I didnt remember ..So he went to his bedroom and returned with this fellow ... Then I rembered about it ..
It was one of my first cowboys and he let me take it and photo it .. It is probably close to 10 years old ... So here it is .. Please dont laugh .. It was one of my first attempt's at flat plane carving a full figure .. Also I was carving larger figures then ..
He stands 8 inches high and is carved from basswood in the flat plane style with a knife and v -tool ...
Gene

| | Re: My First Cowboy Gene I don't see anything wrong with it, I think its great. Even thou I haven't done carvings like that I have seen many of them. You can see instantly the personality of this cowboy which makes it more of a interesting piece. Carve away

| | Re: My First Cowboy Well Gene; you sure fooled me. When I read the posting title I though, OK Gene just got through carving his first cowboy. Then, without reading the post, I clicked on the photos. Firstthought was wow, Genes got a bit more detail in this one. And I liked it very much. Then I read the copy. How old is this carving? How big is this carving. I guess the size explains the detail. Your current carvings are what? about 3 or 4 times smaller? But the fact remains - you were doing a great job 10 years ago too. Thanks for sharing..Tom H |

| | Re: My First Cowboy Gene....Looks pretty good to me. Certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Matter of fact, in the last issued of Woodcarving Illustrated they've been showing photos of the CCA members carvings when they first started along with those they're doing now. In my opinion some of them should have stuck with what they were first doing. I still have the first I did and it is and always will be my favorite. It's sort of like a good book....that first chapter captures your interest and makes you read on to see what the outcome will be. In my case I hope I never find out how the story ends but I sure hope it continues to be an interesting read.
Again, Nice work!!! |

| | Re: My First Cowboy Hey Gene, first cowboy carving--he's really good and puts the 'C' in Caricature. It must have been like seeing two old friends that day.
