Here is my latest piece. Just got him finished and put together this afternoon. He turned out real well and that coffee pouring from the cup really makes a unique effect. Had a lot of fun figuring out how to make it look like it was really pouring. The pour is made from two pieces of thin welding wire bent to the shape of the drop to the ground. I then used expoxy to fill the space between them. There is a hole in the base and the wire extends down into the base for stability. If you could look inside the cup, and it's really made from Tin with a metal rim, you'd note that the level for the liquid inside is the correct level for the lip. I did that by slowly filling the cup to allow the epoxy to flow to the wire. Once it did that I stopped. I also worked the epoxy where it hits the ground to into a natural ring pattern that would be made from coffee hitting the ground! Looks great. Painted the coffee to look like the consistancy of dirty oil and then put a gloss coat to make it liquid. Also tried something new on the chaps conchos but I'm going to keep that technique secret. The coffee pot is carved. The bail, handle and the bottom lift are also made from metal. I attached the handles and lift with small decorative nails. To get the speckled enamel effect I painted the whole pot Midnight Blue then, where the pot would set on the fire and get smoked, I used black and blended it into the blue. Once that was dry I loaded my toothbrush, took a deep breath and flicked the bristles. You never know where those splatters are going but it worked out okay. There is a small fire in front but, again, that's a technique I'll keep secret for a while. I had to use the old noodle a little to get everything to work the way I wanted but that's what makes woodcarving so fun. Last edited by Lynn O. Doughty; 04-08-2006 at 06:52 PM. |
