| | Liberty Cuffs I am trying to catalog my carving collection for my insurance purposes.
That's where I came across this caricature of a U.S. Navy sailor, (recently broke back to third class).
It is one of my earlier caricatures, so it is slightly out of proportion.
Anyhow, I thought the ex-sailors might enjoy seeing it.

Dave, I picked up my cuffs on the "strip" in Great Lakes while attending Engineman A-school.
Bob, The sailor was carved from memory, so he should reflect some of the characters I knew.
Here is a very short story:
When I joined the Navy (1971), I was too young, so my father had to sign for me.
On one stop in Long Beach, myself and another engineman had to clean the injectors on the main propulsion engines before we could go on liberty.
Both myself and the other sailor were 17 at the time. When we finally finished, showered and put on civilian clothes it was midnight.
As we left the pier, we could hear a band playing in the club (on base).
So we went in and had a great time drinking and dancing with the numerous ladies present. Needless to say, we stayed and closed the place down.
The next day, we learned it was the officers club; that explained why everyone there was close to our age.

| | Re: Liberty Cuffs Rick.... Great carving. We ought to move this thread over to Off Topic so that everyone can do a show and tell on thier liberty cuffs. I got mind when I bought my first set of gaberdines at JUNCO's in Sasebo. The gaberdine's have long since been deep sixed but I still have my cuffs. Amazingly I still have my dress woolies and I can still squeeze into them (barely)....typical QM belly! Ha! Ha!
