Default Large(r) unfinished Caricatures

Okay, I posted the little ones....

These were carved from 3/4" square stock and are about 3" tall.

The first two photos are of a bearded farmer - almost "Amish" in appearance (forgive the sterotyping). I noticed that I did not finish his eyes after reviewing the picture. I still have time.

The next is of a civil war soldier...need to put something in his right hand.

The last two are of a farmer. I carved him with his head slightly tilted to one side - this is a great way to practice adding motion and "attitude" to carvings.

Mitch,
Looks good my friend. I think first guy is finished, I wouldn't add a thing as the eyes are suggested and if you said nothing it would just have been part of his expression (squinting possibly).

One question though, do you do any bad saw work on these characters at the start? (Just wondering if there was a cutout that you started from)

Good to see you getting some carving time in!

Thanks all....

Tony, I rarely pre-cut out any of these figures.... they are just as easy to start with a knife since they are so small. Actually, most of the time I don't even know what it's going to be until after I start. If I was to carve a few of the same piece, I may use a saw to cut out the blanks - that way I would be starting with the same dimensions and have a better chance of being consistent.

I start with a head size and then decide what I want to figure to look like height-wise from there.
