| | kevlar Gloves I carve at the senior center, there are about 10 to 15 carvers, about half of them do not wear a protection glove. to tell you the truth about half of them can't aford the 20.00 for a glove. I got on the internet and found this site http://www.magidglove.com/product.asp?pf%5Fid=1399
I got 24 kevlar gloves ( 1 dz.)a little liteweight but works good . cost about 2.50 per glove (they are reverseable.fit either hand. for 10.00 per dz. more they have a heavy weight glove. i will either give then away or sell them to the ones who can aford them. ( for 2.50)

| | Re: kevlar Gloves I am not an expert on carving gloves but the closer the weave the better they are as for puncture proof. I doubt they are completely puncture proof. I have three different brands of Kelvar carving gloves, One pair with the pinky finger tip cut off. A little trick I learned from RICK. I don't use them as if I can cut the tip off with a knife, they aren't good enough to carve with. None will keep a 3mm gouge from going through them.
However, I have learned to wear the gloves and don't have the cuts I use to get.
I know, keep your fingers and hand away from the knife.

| | Re: kevlar Gloves Kenny S,
My 20.00 gloves won't stop a poke with a gouge . but it stop a slice, not many stitches with a poke, can be major problems with slice. the weave in the 2.50 dollar gloves are about the same as my 20.00 gloves

Originally Posted by Kenny_S I am not an expert on carving gloves but the closer the weave the better they are as for puncture proof. --snip--! | Here is a really old butchers glove. i had to bring out while carving the 2x4 spruce cow.(kept poking myself with the 1/4th gouge). its made only to cover the first 3 fingers,.. even being made of metal, Its not even puncture proof, not evident in the photos but there is several busted links where i have pushed small gouges through, in slipping while carving cherry or some other really hard wood..
i dont mind getting cut, its payment for not thinking of where the cutting edege will go in its natural motion... i do hate bleeding all over my project.
gloves protect the innocent i think. you cant put a pair on and just flail and hack at a piece of wood...
good job jim getting them old folks some protection, Remember most of them young elders are on blood thinners, like me...... HAW!!

| | Re: kevlar Gloves I guess I didn't explain myself correct. All I was saying these Kelvar gloves don't keep you from gouging yourself, even if they claim. been there.
I was not downing those as I have 3 Kelvar gloves and all three claimed to be cut proof and puncture proof. The pinky finger on the one proved it was not cut proof and the little punctures I have had and probably will have is a proof that what they claim isn't so. Now, maybe a wide sweep gouge it is puncture proof.
I use to not wear these gloves but now I do. I have also backed the Kelvar gloves up with a pig hide glove and works great.
Hope this clears up any misunderstandings. |

| | Re: kevlar Gloves For the longest time I didn't wear a glove when I carved, until I slipped and took a nice chunk out of my knuckle. Now I use a kevlar glove (bought it at bass pro shops, sold as a fish filetting glove). When I use a rotary tool, I wear a leather glove. I found out the hard way that rotary wood rasps will also "rasp" your fingers pretty good too. |

| | Re: kevlar Gloves Jim......You ought to buy another batch and sell them. I'd buy a couple at a markup. I use one just like the one on the site and it cost me $20.00. I'm going to talk to the group I carve with to maybe buy a bunch and split the cost.
Anybody who carves without some form of hand protection is a ..... what's a kind way of saying a Fool? I've seen so many people slice themselves up and head off to the Emergency Ward for the lack of a glove or a thumb protector. I've been using gloves for 15 years and wouldn't think of picking up a knife without one on.
The Filet gloves sold at Walmart work okay but are not as hefty as the white ones. I wrap thumb protection tape over the thumb and first two fingers of my glove, not so much for added protection but to extend the life of the glove. My wife sews on the bottom of the tape to keep it from slipping off the gloves fingers. Works great and the glove almost lasts forever. |

| | Re: kevlar Gloves I have been using these golves when I carve, If you order gloves from that site I gave you ,I think I would get the heavy duty one's ($10.00 more for a doz.) these lighter duty ones are like a chip magnet the chips that you carve or touch when you come in contact with your carving table sticks to the glove. other than that they are a good cut and stitch preventor.
