| | Jack Price Characters Size? I recently bought the DVD of Jack Price Carving the Compact Characters. In the video he says the size is 2" but does not say what the width is. By reference it looks to be about 1/2" to 5/8" wide. Can anyone tell me what the width is?
Thanks |

I'm looking at the finished products in the house now, I'll be back to my shop later, and if it's different then that, I'll repost.
Love to do them, you should enjoy. |

| | Re: Jack Price Characters Size? His book, "Carving Compact Characters" does list the size. I don't have it in front of me but I think it was about 7/8 as Bob mentioned. The books is good for the face practice stick he has you carve.

| | Re: Jack Price Characters Size? Just checked the book, and he suggests 13/16, I think I cut mine 7/8 so I would have a LOT more wood to work with! :>) |

| | Re: Jack Price Characters Size? Bob,
I have both books in front of me. He uses a board measuring 12"x12"x1" to cut the blocks. He adds that most 1" thick boards are actually 13/16" thick which is the better fit for the basic man pattern. So there is the thickness or depth for the pattern. He also talks about 2" blocks that is the height. To get the number of blocks (78) out from a board 12"x12"x1" knowing that 2" is the height, you are probably looking at a width of 7/8" inch considering there is waste from the kerf made by the band saw blade.
Bottom line: 2" height, 7/8" width, and depth 13/16" depth.
I hope this helps.

| | Re: Jack Price Characters Size? mbevington,
one thing i have seen done is to get a peice of basswood 1x1x12 and carve the first 2 inches and when done cut it off and do another as you move down you will use all of the wood and plus the long length gives you something to hold on to.

| | Re: Jack Price Characters Size? It's not all that critical, I've made them in every size from a little less than 1/2" wide to a full inch. Same with the height. If your worried about exact measurements, you can always interpolate. That too isn't all that critical, a good guess works. Just be careful, it's very easy to cut yourself when working with very small pieces like that. |

| | Re: Jack Price Characters Size? I agree that you can carve these in any size that suits your fancy. With copy machines that can enlarge and reduce patterns to any dimension, you should be able to carve whatever size you want, but Jack Price uses the size mentioned.
