Thanks everyone. Your kind words inspire. Sorry Marci and Shimmy, but who is John Goodman? I guess I ought to goggle him.
Gene, you make me realize that one can easily stereotype. Hope there is no offense given in the carving. Just the image I have in my head.

i've noticed that we are our hardest critics. we judge our own work as if it were the worst thing we've ever done, when it could very well be the best piece we've done. because it really takes an outside view to let us know how well we've actually done. so to be honest about the piece. i really do like the it. it loolks like a guy from the movie gangs of new york. you done a really good job on the carving of your irishman. the cuts are great and the ear looks just fine. thank you for sharing.

Thanks Tiger, yes it is an ear isn't it. Maybe a cauliflower ear from too much boxing.

I agree with Tiger....very nice work! You will have to check with Anthony Filetti and see if he knows the guy since he lives up there in New York! I would be interested to see him painted when you get finished!

Nice work John,
I don't see anything I would change as it is a great face!

Thanks Jim, appreciate the look see and the encouragement.

Grove City anywhere near Celeryville, OH. Spent a night there long ago. Had teaching friends living there.

Looks great to me. I think you did a terrific job. Can't wait to see it painted.

Nice carving with a different approach - the 3/4 effect is great. You did a nice job on the facial features.

Many times we, as carvers, try to put in too much detail. It can be more about "ILLUSION"... precisely, don't try to do too much with the ear. It appears to me that you may have quit on the ear (I know that kinda goes against what I just said)....the top has more detail and then ends about midway down - without any detail. It's not really anything that stands out though. I would not have really noticed if you had not made a point of it.

Thanks Brandant.

I "hear" what you are saying Mitchell. The word "illusion" is good reminder for me. It is what we can get the viewer to feel or "see." I will look at it again before I paint. Often more is less.

Hey John,
FYI, Grove City is just a little south of Columbus, Home of America's Team, The Ohio State Buckeyes. That ought to elicit some different opinions ;O))
Never heard of Celeryville.
