Those are nice looking carvings. I have tried to find a book on it and was unable. I thought I might order it from interlibrary loan. Do you use pen inserts from local stores and glue them in. If so do you have to discard them when you run out of ink. I have been doing little guys from Jack Price and thought this might be a neat alternative

Don't know if you'd be interested but here's a link to Addall.com which searches the book selling websites for availability and then sorts by the best price including s&h. This is for "Carving Pen Figures" by Steve Brown. The only book I've come across on pen carving.

Randal... I was just looking though the new Smoky Mountain Woodcarver catalog the other night and spotted their basswood pen kit that they sell. I never gave a thought to trying to make my own. Nice work! I have a hard time with the small detail that you seem to excel at.

When I make the pen blanks I first drill the small hole which is for the stick pen cartridge then I drill it again with a LONG drill deep enough for the cartridge next I drill the large hole which requires R & D on scrap wood. I buy the expensive stick pens at Big Lots and or Target I think the ones at Big Lots 15 for a buck are a bit better than the ones from Target 20 for a buck "you get what you pay for". I just make a tight PRESS fit for the cartridge and it seems to work well, as I said earlier when doing the LONG drilling it sometimes wanders and makes a hole in the side of the pen blank "2-3%". I just bondo it up and cut the cartridge to fit.

You're welcome! Don't be afraid to buy a used book. Often, the book just has a little ding or scratch and they knock quite a few dollars off the price. If it says new, like new, etc., then it's usually a good buy. So, make sure your read through all the listings of the book you're interested in buying. I'll buy a used bookthat's like brand new for $10 including s&h, and then buy a new tool or some more wood for the other $15. You can't beat that! Good luck!
