| | Homer! It was to cold to carve out in the garage yesterday so I took some wood and carved in the basement. I just sat down and started carving and this is what I came up with. I was trying for a cowboy but not sure what it is I know it has a big hat. I don't know if the eyes are even in the right place. This is just a peice to play with something different from relief. Fire away with your critic and don't sugar coat it. I know I have to do some sanding .

| | Re: Homer! OK, Ron, here's my take on it, and I've only got the front view to look at, so I may be wrong. It looks like the face is too flat. If you start from the tip of the nose, the whole face should sort of angle toward the back of the head as if there were a 90 degree angle away from the nose. 45 degrees to each side. Or thereabouts. Quite a few of the "carving instructional sticks" for faces start with a square piece of wood, and the nose on one corner.
The rest looks pretty darn good to me!

| | Re: Homer! Looks good Ron the only critque is that the head is too big especially where the hat meets the head and I agree the face is too flat but other than that you have a great start. You posted it at the right time too you can take off more wood but you cant put it back on. Sorry to hear that it is still cold down there.

| | Re: Homer! Ron,
That is just incredible!
If I had your vision, I would never attempt such a difficult piece.
You even carved fingers!
I think the only way to judge your work is to examine it with closed eyes.
I don't recommend a candy coating, perhaps just a little Boiled linseed oil.

| | Re: Homer! Nice one Ron. Really! I doubt any of us could have done any better with our eyes shut or blindfolded. Yes, the face is a little flat but then, I don't know what was in your mind.
To many carvers look for perfection and don't let their artist mind and eyes take over.JMO! |

| | Re: Homer! Ron, I agree with the other post what a terrific job. I just showed my wife your carving and she stated how amazing your are.
You asked a question about the eyes. It seems that the left eye as you are looking at the face is ok but the right eye might be too far away from the nose. As others have said though, if you remove the flatness of the face you can easily adjust the eye position.
I think your carving is just amazing and I or any of us would be proud to be the recepient!
