Default HillBilly Chess Set

I've been kicking around, in my head, an idea for a Hillbilly Chess set.
The Rook would be outhouses, the nights long eared Donkeys. Been thinking the pawn would be simple "jugs". The King and Queen would simple be Folk people.
(Harold Enlow "Carving Figures Caricature in the Ozark Style. P27 Rufus and Sadie.
Not sure what to make the Bishops so it would country/rustic, other than a cross on some sort of pedestal.
The other issue I see is they would have to be relatively small.
Any ideas out there, maybe other possible patterns for a good mule head.

The bishops could be a old time preacher of the hell and brimstone variety. One hand in the air and the other on a bible. Caricature carvers of america did a book on the full moon saloon. There was a preacher in there that would look great. You can find images of a mules head on Google images. You rooks could also be monshine stills. As another thought how about a set based on the feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys? Didn't it start over pig? Another more current idea might be a political set with the republicans and democrats... It should be a lot of fun anyway you go.

some photos as you make them!

I started one based on that Woodcarving Illustrated - How To Magazine for Carvers - Carving a Hillbilly Chess Set

but only completed the outhouses and stopped after beginning some characters... I'm too slow to complete the set in a realistic time to keep the motivation to finish it.

Tom,
That sounds like a pretty consumming project, I wish you well.
FYI: I carved Rufus and Sadie (and a side kick I called Junior). They are posted in my gallery if you are interested in seeing them. I called them Ma, Pa & Junior though.
Good Luck.

Ed

Boy! Time flies.....

If you use the search function you may find some older posts on this chess set along with others. OR look at "similar threads" at the bottom of the page.

'course you can always ask more questions.

Shoes (boots) or even dog heads (mini busts) could make good options as pawns.

I though about dogs for pawn, but they would have to be small. so the jug being round it would work. Unless I made a large board for it.
