Default hair on wood spirits

well after carving about 20 of these I am getting closer to a good product. I have a question about the beard hair if someone wants to help. I see some of these with fancy curls and waves inthe hair, how does one go about that? I have been tapering the wood with a large gouge and then using a veiner to make the plaits, but its not quite right. Is there a easier way to make wavy kinds of hair? Its hard to explain, guess I should try and find a picture of one.

Hi rickm, for my beards I begin with various sizes of v-tools from large to small depending on the size of the face. Also I use an S pattern running from the top of the beard to the bottom. Also, detail knife works really well for creating furrows too.
