This is one of the old wooden{Curly Maple} text tile spools. Carved an old granny looking for her cat. Course she doesnt know its under her dress.Duhhh~With one hand on her hip and the other holding her corn cob pipe.I can still hear her,Here Kitty, here KITTYyyyy! The spool is 10 3/8 inches tall,Granny is 6 7/8 tall and 1 5/8 wide. Painted with acrylics. Your thoughts are welcome. Forrest

Haha... she looks lost herself... a bit... I like these carvings that tell stories. Nicely done. I would like to carve in this kind of spools, but the wood must be so hard. Gilles

Gilles I was carving alot of the Twilight wolves in maple but this antq spool was harder, guess it had to be to be used on the machines. The problem also,I couldnt tell how deep I could carve it.I could stick my little finger in the top of the brass ring but still couldnt reach any sides while in the core, which meant it was pretty thin inside so I relief carved it deep as I could. The hardest wood Ive carved is locus and black gum its super hard, its the hardest wood Ive carved. Oak,Cherry,Maple,Walnut and all the rest you can carve. Thanks Gilles for your neat comments and Im gald you like old granny! Forrest

Merle my ole friend,it wasnt too bad carving this old spool but you have to carve it going round cause the whole spool is round.Painting is the same, paint going in a circle also. This wasnt a super neat paint job, just sloped it on but that style kinda went with granny. Im gald my friend you like this carving and I thank you for taken your time to view it & your nice thoughts. Forrest

Hey Dan,I'll tell you the truth how granny came about?? Im out of wood to carve on.Just got back inside from ck'n in my outside wood bid,I've not had any new wood in guessing 3 yrs.Sawmills havent been cutting any timber around here or in NC where most of the times I get scraps to carve on. So Im carving what I can in what I can is how I carved this old spool. I have some thinner hickory boards a man gave me two yrs ago at a art show, him and his wife are always at this show.Guess I'll start on some sort of wildlife on this thin hickory board in the morning. I hate buying wood, got plenty of bass but I want and need some deep relief carvings. Im glad my ole buddy you liked this granny and I thank you for your nice thoughts always. Forrest
