few daya ago I Sent my sis the list of ball types to carve, she's a arts & crafty skilled gal and was wondering what to do with golfballs, as her husband is a tiger woods wanna be as she states,
she told me she just didnt know what to do with all the "t"'s and balls he collects,

She's good with lapadary, sculpy pvc clay, as well as her dremel so this ought to be right down her alley...

recieved a shoe box size parcell from her, and wallah! golf balls & "T's" galore...

now for a subject?

Two piece golf balls are the ones you can carve, three piece are usually rubber band type (titelist DT) and (titelist Balata) these two type I believe are still made, I guess most or all the older 50s 60s 70s golf balls were three piece? High end titelist golf balls now I believe have liquid center which are Carveable. All the carveable core golf balls are said to be liquid center.

Yep some have liquid filled centers....

Thinking i was smart enough to remove the outter coating with my lathe? daah!

i built a cup on the faceplate and used the dead center on the other end, turned the lathe rpm down low and started with a small gouge, about halfway through i got some vibration and the devil broke loose,
the ball went one way
but i was wet, seeing no red color, i checked for missing parts, then found the ball, apperntly cut too deep on one side the hollow core was aperent....... Whew!!!!

back to the old way hahah......

mouse balls are the same material, just smaller..:P you could get a lot of attention at a woodshow with a sign selling "mouse balls"! LOL

I prefer to do my ball carving with a 5 Iron. Think I'll got carve a few right now. Life is tough.

Hey guys,

I just thought of something I learned when I was carving a lot of golf balls. The longer they are cut open, the harder (dry/cured) they get. I tried to carve them within a day or two of opening them up--and I kept them in a ziplock bag when I wasn't working on them. It was always easier to open 1/2 dozen at a time, then start carving them til they were all done.

I missed carving one that I had opened up and found it 2-3 months later and tried carving it. It was hard as a rock!

The first time our club tried doing golf balls at a meeting (in the dining room of the local hospital where we met), we cut into one that had the liquid center surrounded by rubber bands. They started shooting out in every direction with everyone ducking and dodging. They the middle squirted out and sprayed 3-4 of us. Made it one of the more memorable projects!

I've seen animals, flowers, people, buildings, you name it, carved into golf balls. They are fun and quick to do.

I don't really sell my golfballs yet. I'm just a newbie but I have had offers of 25 dollars or more for mine. I usally just have a wash of color over them to bring out all the features. Nothing fancy. I carved a turtle out of a golfball and a friend wanted to buy it for $40 dollars but I was so shocked that I could carve a turle I just had to keep it.
