Myron:
you cut three sides of the holder the same size,I think its 1 1/4" and then cut the back 1/4" larger trim the holes down and then soak the wood in alcohol and let set a while.then push a golf ball in the larger side and let it dry.

Our article suggested water...does alcohol (I'm assuming the rubbing variety not the drinking variety) work better?

I doubt it....the water softens and expands the wood, I would think the alcohol would evaporate too fast to do much good.....never tried it, but thats what I assume would happen. I have only done one of these and didn't quite cut enough wood...and wow is it tough to get that golfball in there ha ha......should try another I guess.

I have used both,and alcohol seems to do a better job of making the wood grains pliable.
