Default Gave away four carvings today in Iowa City....

I took my mom down there today to have her eyes worked on again.
I noticed my display case is getting pretty full of stuff. So, I went through it and picked out four old carvings I did some time ago. nothing fancy, but I gave them to the gals at the reception desk and scheduling desk.
I was surprised to see how happy they were to get the little guys. I warned them against leaving them on their desks alone, ( they have a way of disappearing). Sad to say, but some people will pick up anything that catches their eye.
Anyhow, I felt good about giving something I made to someone who appreciated it.
This really is a fun hobby.

Last fall while I was supposed to be deer hunting I carved around 15 Elf orniments. Opening day we had 3 ft of snow so nothing was moving until the weather improved.

I just gave them out to people I saw who did a kind act for someone, held a door open for and elderly lady etc. The look on peoples faces when I handed it to them with a "Merry Christmas" and then walked away was a sight to behold.

For awhile I would only show my carvings to friends as I did not think they were very good. Then one time the receptionist at the hospital saw a book I had and when she questioned me I showed her a carving (Jack Price style) she loved it and I gave it to her since then I am always giving them out. I think I get as much enjoyment from it as they do.

The joy of giving is something, isn't it! It's not at all hard to do, in fact it's easy. And it doesn't have to be an object, it can be time. Even a wee little bit of time can mean so much. Thanks for sharing. See, this posting has already made me feel a bit uplifted.

Every carving I have ever done over these past 15 or so years has been given away. I think I would feel guilty if I charged someone for one. Not that I find anything wrong with someone selling their work, just for me, as a hobbie carver, I havent had an oportunity to sell anything.

I love giving away my carvings. Just seeing somebody's face light up is great. I've had some friends tell me I could sell some things (imagine that!), but I won't even try. First, I don't think my stuff is good enough to sell. Second, I'd hate to start thinking of carving--a way for me to relax and pass the time--as a job.

Thumbs up Re: Gave away four carvings today in Iowa City....

Thats why carving is so important to learn .. even if you dont turn out masterpieces .. you turn out a piece that is a part of history .. a part of a time gone by .. and people love them

Thanks for the great story

Its a great thing to share your efforts, with others

i never imagined my carvings were that good,
but im looking at them from a different viewpoint,

since the last stays, last Sept laid up in the heart ward 2 weeks, i tried to do some carving and my doctors assistant cought me and set up a commission for the heart doctors Christmas present, she said the office would share the commission price so charge good,...

I had finished a carving i had started for my general practitioner, and give to him before hand, so i carved another doctor this one with a telescope, his hobby was star gazing,
i gave it to the assistant free gratis just before Christmas not really mounted to the base, but it tickled the whole office..
they all know me as the carver guy now,

and it lightened my depression greatly.. iv still never sold a carving, but im saving them up for the grand children, they still cant control their fingers looking through the glass case at them...
