Default friendship cane

I am interested in carving a cane with some of my friends but have no idea what type of wood is best to use and what size does each piece need to be for a standard size cane. We are new carvers with limited experience but thought that this would be a project that would help us learn as a group. Any suggestions would great.Motorcycle

Let's not forget WILLOW (not the cork screw Type) That was my first cane. Took it around with me for years and had carving friends cave on it.. it's walking height. The second one I started was out of aspen... pine would be near the bottom of my list as would any wood that will not take fine detail..guess I will have to get my old cane out and take a few pictures...REMEMBER to make a little drawing and add the name's... as the years go by..ICU or JPO may not ring a bell.. mine started over 25 years ago and a number or no longer around to ask.
I liked the old way better that the BLOCKS...but I do have a BIG block one in the garage.
