Default Re: The Flat Plane Process

Thanks for all the kind comments on my work .... to be commended by such good carvers as all of you are is a compliment .. But I considered myself a fair carver at the most ... I have so much to learn ..

The reason I posted this thread was to see if there were any other carvers out there that could as well help me in my love of flat plane work .. I have gone to a lot of carving show's and seen very little of it , so I just started fishing for some answer's .. Thank you all so much for your input ..

Mitchell : Thanks for the encouragement ..Ia'm sorry I didnt paragraph as I should have .. I got in a hurry for work and just jumbled it all together .. No it's not your computer .. It's me ....Thanks for the tip ...

Shimmy : Your Refsal carving's of the old man and his wife are great ... But your reliefs are wonderful .. Thanks for the encouragement ..

Eddy: Thanks for the comments and I thought your cleaning lady was great .. Dont sell yourself short on talent ..

Blake : After seeing your work personally .. You know how I feel about it .. By the way my wife took it from me she liked it so much ...

Smurfy : Yes .. I use basically only a knife for at least 95% of the figure and a few v- tool's for the hair ... As far as the patterns .. I have several simple .patterns I use to create just about all my work .. but i dont use pete's patterns to carve by ...Thanks for the encouragement ...

Rocket: As far as the knife is concerned .. The reason I use the Ron Wells knife is because it's almost like a kitchen paring knife .. The blade is thin and I found can make the cut's more easily especially with the smaller figures ... You dont have to use that kind .. but I just find it work's for me ..

Thank you again for all your remarks ..

Gene,
Great work, I like how you keep it simple and straightforward by using only a knife and v-tool, but also have a lot of expression.
I myself cannot resist making a couple more cuts here and there until, well it is not flat plane anymore.
I am also a big Trygg fan, as well as Anderson and others; but it seems I always end up referring to my Emil Janel book for inspiration.
Keep up the good work.
Jim

Your so called Flat carvings??? They have been around since Axel Petersson{1800's} who was referred to as, the"father" of caricature carvings. Plus so many other Europen flat cavers that has influenced our current style of carving today! Lars Trygg,Herman Rosell,Andy Anderson and the list goes on and on! Your carvings are very unique~!! Keep up the good work Gene!
