| | Flat Plane - Harley Refsal DVD This past summer I purchased Harley Refsals DVD on Flat Plane carving where he takes you thru carving his character Karl Oskar. For those of you who were wondering about this DVD, here is my impression. This DVD is not for the beginner while it is a step by step video it would probably frustrate beginners. Flat plane carving of the size in the video requires good hand strength as to create large facets it needs to be done with a continuous pull. It also requires a very sharp knife and most beginners (myself included) do not fully understand sharpening when we first started this hobby.
For the experienced carver it is a good exposure to a differing style that is easy and quick and satisfying, heck I ws able to complete my version in a day, that is an accomplishment in itself as I am probably the slowest carver I know.
For the experienced flat plane carver, this includes some history of Scandanavian carvers which in itself is interesting.
The production of the DVD I would rate as 'good'. This was the first attempt at a video so you have to bear with some inconveniences which are evident when trying to pause, rewind and replay sections of the video.
The price of the DVD is good so if this is your cup of tea it will be worth your while.
Below is the end result. |

| | Re: Flat Plane - Harley Refsal DVD Tony .. Iam so glad someone did a flat plane piece instead of me ... Sometimes I feel by myself in that category ..
And what a wonderful piece you did .. your following of the carving video is excellent ..
Your cuts are right on and your painting is also excellent ...
You just did a great all around job Tony ... I know this is a different type of carving to alot of people and I commend you for trying it ...
If your use to the way you carve ... then it's quite a change .. but as you said ... it's sometimes a quick way of creating a very lookable figure ...
The DVD is very good .. but as you said .. It's for a more experienced carver and the knife must be razor sharp and thin ...
Thanks so much for trying it ... I dont expect a sudden switch from your original great carvings .. but your attempt proves you are a carver of many skills ..
Gene

| | Re: Flat Plane - Harley Refsal DVD I also purchased this Video. And I really liked it. I have did several flat plane carving and enjoyed watching the Master. One thing I noticed all his cuts are away from him and his body parts. I tried this and it don't work with this old dog.
anyway you you did an outstanding job on your Osker.
