You did a good job on the hands (the carving, I mean, not your own). Hands are hard for me to get right. Parker

It looks like you have a good start on a long and satisfying hobby. Be sure to take the time to read all the archives here. There is some great information.

What a great start Jordan! I wish I had discovered carving at 22. All great suggestions from some terrific carvers, I use horse wrap, basically pet wrap on 4" rolls $2.75 at a tack store, then cut it in half. Wrap my thumb and first finger and wear a glove. After several hundred dollars to the local hospital, I wear it every time now, makes the carvings a whole lot cheaper to do and I would rather spend the $ on new tools! lol Keep carving! Mike

Thanks for all the comments guys! I have started a new little guy, I am making an Indian, and this one sure went a lot quicker! I pretty much have the carving done, just need to paint now. I absolutely love this hobby, there is something so satisfying about it, and I am finding 3 hours have gone by and I haven't even realized it. I dropped one of my tools during the Indian, and chipped it a bit. So I read a lot about sharpening, and ended up going and buying 4 grades of wetdry sandpaper (400, 800, 1000, 2000 grit) just to try it out and I actually got it to a pretty decent edge again. I have no real way of knowing how well I did, but it cuts pretty much like I remember it did again, so I am happy! (Eventually I will invest in diamond stones I think.) Thanks again, I'll post the indian once I get it painted! |
