| | First Knight I'm new to the board so I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct spot. I just completed my first caricature carving, I'm calling it a Knight. The wood is basswood with acrylic paint and a top coat of polyurethane. Enjoy!

| | Re: First Knight Mike, not too far away in Tifton, Georgia. We come to St. Augustine several times a year.
Nice job on your first characture carving. Looks like you used basswood which is a good choice for your first project. You picked a good pattern or did you carve it from scratch? Either way you did a fine job.

Nice job! I've been carving in the round for only four years and even if my work hasn't improved all that much there is one thing that I've learned about carving... "You can please some people some of the time but you can't please all the people all of the time!"
I've found that the most important thing about carving is to try and learn one thing from each project that you do and take that thing on to your next project. And if you like what you've carved then it doesn't really matter what any one else thinks. Art is subjective and even a happy mistake can be make a piece very unique!
Keep up the great work and have fun! |

| | Re: First Knight Welcome to the board Mike and welcome to the carving world. Nice job on the knight.
Now you need to carve one more knight, put them in a scene checking into a hotel and have them say "Do you have a room for two (k)nights?" ;-) |

| | Re: First Knight Good one. Yes it is basswood, a guy I work with is an experienced carver and he drew a basic pattern on the side of the wood. It then changed many times and mine turned out nothing like his. Thanks for the advice. I plan to attempt a larger cowboy caricature next.
GeorgiaCarver we love St Augustine as well. I'm a Florida native but got transferred to Atlanta for 6 years. We moved back as soon as we could. Been through Tifton many a time.

| | Re: First Knight Nice knight you have there Mike for a first carving and I'd certainly say that he's valiant enough to stand guard at "Castillo de San Marcos". I too have spent a LOT of time wandering the streets and attractions of St. Augustine... great place!!
