Default First Date

Carved from walnut log, 43" tall. The influence for this guy was my wife's great grandfather JJ McLaughlin 1851-1931. He was a dapper Scottish immigrant who worked for the railroad in the late 1800s. JJ wrote a small biography about his life just before he died . He describes the early days of the RR and his travels across the country before he settled in Montana. JJ was a bit of a ladies man who, on occasion, would seek the comfort of women and whiskey. The lower half of the log was hollow so the legs are very stylized. He is partially stained, part painted and antiqued ,finished with poly .The flower was an add on. I wasn't sure which forum to post this on, but I thought you guys might like him . Thanks for looking, Mark.

Neat story, you made good use of the Walnut. I'm sure he would be pleased to know he hasn't been forgotten.

Thanks for the comments! Yes the walnut is pretty hard but it is the only species I have carved so nothing to compare it to...getting some birch this week, I have heard it carves well. Mark

Mark,
thanks for sharing with us. This really turned out nice. I really like the carving, and the way that you finished him out with the partial stain, partial painting. Looks good.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

Mark, that's a beautiful carving! I can only imagine what it took to plan that out and make use of the legs the way you did. You can sure be proud of that one! Wonderful finishing job, as well. I'd love to see that in person. Bonnie
