Nice job! I too like carving from the corner as it helps me lay out the face better. I've tried doing it on the flat, but lose to much wood trying to create the 90deg for the face. Keep those pics comin'! Steve

Looks like a really good start. It's kind of hard to tell from the picture, but the eyes look a little small. The eye mounds (not the lids) should reach about halfway down the nose.
