Default First Attempt at Dave Stetson Face

I am interested in doing caricature carving and received Dave Stetson's Head to Toe Caricature book for Christmas. Here is my first attempt at his face from a corner of a block. Hopefully, after I get some good basswood, I can make some progess on a full caricature in the round.

Let me know what you think, compliments and criticism are always appreciated.

To clarify, this is not supposed to be Dave's face, just the first one he presents in the book.

It looks very close to the face in that book (I have it too). How do you like carving on the corner of the block? I learned to put the face on the flat side, I cannot adjust to carving on the corner...it just confuses me and throws my hands into a tizzy...guess it is what you are used to.

You did a good job on the face, especially the mouth. Keep on carving!

To me the hardest part of a carving is the face. And you did great on it. So I would say you are well on ur way.

SlowMover -- I like using the corner because it helps me bring the nose out, but I haven't tried using the flat part either. I need to try it and see which I really prefer.

I attempted to do the same face, only a little smaller on a (poplar) walking stick this afternoon and began to get frustrated with the nose. I had to put it down and will come back to it later.

Hopefully the first one didn't just turn out to be beginner's luck and the next one's give be trouble.

You did a fine job on the face. When you worked on the walking stick did you carve you square up the round edges of the stick to simulate the corner that you carved your previous face on. That might help you out a little.

Safe Carving and God Bless,

Mark

Mark -- I did square up a corner on the walking stick, but I think I may not have made it sharp enough. I think part of my problem is that the nose is turning out too flat and when I try to use the knife to round the slope of the side of the nose, it is trying to dig too deep in the cheek.
