Rick,

Great job. Which tools did you use, if it is OK to ask? Also, the painting is outstanding! Any comments on painting technique or is it already on your web site?
Doug

Doug,
I use only a limited number of tools for this type of carving;

Carving knife 1-7/8" straight blade (custom) [Roughing, shaping, carving]
Detail knife 1-1/2" straight blade (custom) [Eyes, ears, mouth, nose]
#3,#5,#7 - 3/8" Ramelson gouges [Carving, shaping]
9/64" - 90 degree Ramelson V-tool [Eyes, whiskers, hair, laying out features]
1/4" - 60 degree Ramelson V-tool [Getting clean cuts in hollows]
Dockyard Gouge set ( lines, nose, around eyes]

I haven't done anything on my website concerning painting yet.
But I use washes, for most of my painting; except for the eyes, buttons and any fabric decoration or pattern, where I use paint straight from the bottle.

There are subtle details I add while painting that would be difficult to describe with just text. These include shading, highlighting, specific techniques and the order in which they are applied.
At times while painting, the carving must be wet; and other times it must be completely dry.

Nice job Rick. If you didn't spend so much time with those knives, then you could carve more. Or if you didn't spend so much time with the business, or on your site......

Just kidding of course. You've come very close to matching the Swedish style and your craftsmanship really shows through.

I look forward to seeing some more.

Rick,
The pie guys may be my favorite caricature ever! Wonderful! I'll bet they decided to knock on the door and ask...she had them chop some wood while she fried chicken and they got some pie too! That's what I bet.

I don't know...

How many licks to the center of a tootsie pop?

Tastes Great or Less Filiing?

Which style is right?...

I guess it is just preference of the beholder.

I try to keep my answers confined to wood carving but I'll take a shot.
