Hi All, Had the camera out, so took a picture of the remaining faces on the corner of a block that I have completed. My ideas for the expressions come mostly from imagination although the guy in the center I saw at a Waffle House in Nashville Jim OH |

Once again, Jim.....great work! Wow, what a "schnoz" on that guy in the center. Looks like Jimmy Durante to me! When you have them grouped together like that, you can really see the major differences in the faces. Wonderful painting job, as well. I wish I had your talent for creativity...Bonnie

What an interesting thing the human face is. Each one different and unique and ready to be copied in wood! I have always been a "watcher" of people, started as a kid and observed folks at the stores I worked at, in the service, ashore and afloat, and through the various jobs I've had, in the security field, institional (Federal Maximiun Security Prison) and industrial (Underground Mine and concentrator) (Construction) (Pulp & Paper). Thousands of faces to remember, stories to with them and possibly use for future carvings. And no two faces the same. The ones in prison were the best subjects, because of the type of people they are, all examples of every deviant, anti scoial ,behaviour known to man in housed on one of those places, and face and expressions to match. Great job Jim! Bob

Jim them are some great faces, as i understand it, Carving features on a face are about starting points and following some set progression of steps in a certain order to achieve depth and detail. to bad there is not a tutorial out there on this even an outline on the basics of how the features of this style of charter face is built, bob i agree, i have always been a fan of the older folks faces. every line or wrinkle tells some story of the face, while stationed in Galina Alaska, on remote tour, i spent as much time among the Athabaskan(sp) Indians native to that area as i could, Photographing the ones that allowed me to. others didn't like it because of spirits, Although there is simulatoritys in the family blood lines, each face is its own....

Thank you all for the nice comments! Am currently working on some pieces for CCA competition and hope to find time to carve a few more of these guys before the Dayton, OH show. The main things I run short on is time and inventory ;O)). I realy appreciate all the talented individuals on the board who share their work. It gives me a lot of inspiration to try to keep improving! Thanks again, Jim OH |

Gotta say it again,,not a duplicate in the lot! You have your own style,,which is terrific,,but you don't use the same face with a longer or shorter beard with the same old eyes in every face. And that is the nature of human faces,,sure we all have noses ,eyes ,mouths etc. but not the same ones in what could/should be different faces.I find this much more interesting to look at than the same exact eye, mouth and nose,,in 4 "different" carvings, and by that alone know who carved it before I'm told.As a good caricature carver ( and a good caricature cartooninist would) you learn from looking at life (as you indicate) and exaggerate features naturally as they should be and still capture the essence of each in their uniqueness,,,way to go! Apparently Bob sees it as well,,course he's got an eye for observation,,and that's where it comes from. You don't find this in a pattern,,you find it by looking at life, and carving what you see.
