I've been admiring the little people carvings that have been posted. So I jumped on the band wagon. I know I have to start paying attention to details and such. But I did discover one thing when trying these. I started out to try to carve just one. Cut his nose off! So carved another! Found a round wood bead and glued it on the noseless one. Kinda gives it a nice look. But I am still caught somewhere between regular in-the-round carving and flat plane carving. I'll keep trying....Tom H

Tom ... Those are great .. The painting and carving both .. Those are definately little people ........ Tom .. Ia'm not sure where the idea that a flat plane carving couldn't have some round corners on it .. That is not the idea behind flat plane carving .. I think that's why people become so confused on the subject .. As I said before .. Flat plane carving as Harley Refsal explains it and demo's it is that instead of a final smooth surface .. you leave the knife cuts showing in the figure .. That's all .. Your two elves are definately in that catagory .. but the finished product is the main thing and these two guys are wonderful .. great job Gene Last edited by gene-messer; 04-30-2007 at 04:13 PM. |

Tom: I'd say those are both little people and flat plane carvings, and excellently done. I like the wood bead nose best (looks just a bit bigger). Claude |

Tom....I'm relatively new on here, but I fell in love with Gene's lil' fellas as soon as I saw them....since then, been looking at all the little guys I can find on here. You did a great job on those. They're cute as a button! One of these days, gonna get serious and try this flat plane stuff myself. Only did one lil' guy so far, but in a Jack Price style. When you carve a little fella, you gain new respect for carving small! Bonnie |

Jim , i bet tom was using that long blade knife he just got, and was trimming eyebrows and forgot about the other end of that 2-1/2" blade and what it was a doing out there on the end, --- tom great job on the elves. would'nt have known bout the bead if you wouldnt have told... the one on the right looks like hes got a frog under his hat? huh , i do that myself, i forget how much bigger the hat has to be than the head and wind up with a charter wearing a yanimca way above the ears,Flatplane, Im sure the marks the old masters left was about equal with the amount of time they spent carving them for the tourists... after they carved a thousand they knew where to make the hogging out deep cuts and just finish out with several small nips... ever seen a guy in a cannery gut a fish, what takes us 5 minuets to do, the experienced fish butcher in a cannery dose with 2 very quick cuts,

Nice job Tom, Yep I'd say they fit well into both the little guy and the flat plane carving style. Nice job and I too often have to have a addanosetome or addaneartome operations. It looks like the surgery was a complete sucess. Nice job thanks for sharing, Doug |
