I have Susan Irish's book on dragons and it is well worth the investment....so many dragon images to incorporate.
The only problem is that so many people want to borrow it, that I don't have it here when I need it.
It is available through Fox publishing

Rickm,

Shawn Cipa's book "Carving Fantasy & Legend Figures in Wood" is another great option. There are 2 dragon patterns in the book, and for one of them, he gives the step-by-step carving instructions. I personally like his designs a lot. I'm currently carving the wizard in the same book. (Almost done, actually)

This book is also published by Fox Chapel Publishing.

I've got one of Shawn Cipa's dragons on my bench right now, about 3/4 done. great book. I also have Lora Irish's book, and I HIGHLY reccomend it. It's more than a book of patterns. She gives a history of the evolution of the dragon though time, from the early, 'Wyrm', to the dragons we know today. She breaks down the design elements of all sorts of dragons and gives you the tools you'll need to develope your own. Great book!!!

I absolutely agree with JimSawyer. I have both books and they are both great! I would really recommend getting both books.

Since this post was in the caricature area, I kind of assumed that rickm could use a side/front view of a dragon pattern. Shawn's book provides that (along with step-by-step instructions) and I don't think Lora's does.

On the other hand, rickm really asked for some "really great faces for dragons", and Lora's book provides all kinds of great inspirational dragons and dragon faces.

To me, it's still a big step going from a fairly detailed picture of a dragon (as found in Lora's) book to a side/front pattern that would work for a 3D caricature carving. Maybe rickm wouldn't find that such a large step.

I plan to do a dragon in the not-too-distant future (will probably do one of Shawn's gargoyles first from his new book) and when I do, I'll probably start with one of Shawn's side/front patterns and then modify it with inspiration from Lora's book to make it more my own.

Curt

I'm not familiar with this book by Tom Wolfe. Could you please provide the full title? I looked on the Barnes & Noble web site and they don't list it as far as I can tell. It sounds like a book I would like to have. Thanks!
