Default Don't have to be a great artist to get a decent carving

Hey all. I posted more pics of this in the WIP section. Not completed yet, but coming along good I think. I just wanted to post this to encourage other carvers out there. Maybe you have had an idea but you don't know where to start. Maybey you have looked for a pattern but couldn't find what you are looking for. Even if you are not a great artist and can't draw well (Like Me!) you can still bring your idea to life. A pattern is just a set of guidelines. You don't have to follow them completely. Maybe some better carvers could illustrate this better. I have included three photos down below. One is the pattern I scribbled on a piece of paper from an idea I had. It is pretty obvious I can't draw worth a nickle! The other two are of the carving I finished from the pattern. I used the pattern to cut out a blank and then went to work. I guess what I am getting at, is we don't have to carve other people's ideas all the time. I enjoy it, but the fun of carving for me is doing a piece that is unique. Give it a try. You might enjoy it, and find out you have an ability you didn't think you had! Feedback welcome!

Mark

Mark...you're absolutely right. I'm struggling with something right now that is my own idea. Like you, the thrill is "in the chase" for me, as well, and I'm not a great carver by any means. You did a real nice job on that little scene, and the wagon is terrific. It needs a passenger, though....what about that "teddy" in your sketch? Bonnie

Thumbs up Re: Don't have to be a great artist to get a decent carving

Mark .. wonderful spoken words ... I receive alot of messages from beginners who after seeing the videos .. said .. I think I can do that and have started ..

They havent regretted it since .. It doesnt matter how good you are .. just do it and enjoy .. you wont be sorry ..

Thanks for the words and the wonderful little carving ..

Gene
