I hit a dry spell since Nov 1st I did not carve once. I don't know why. I just didn't feel like it. I wanted to carve but couldn't muster the energy. The longer I went the more I felt like I wouldn't remember how. I started carving in Feb of this year and did not stop. Everyday .. yes Everyday I would carve. and then just like that poof... the feeling was gone , it was weird. Last night I made myself finish a carving, and hope to do some more tonight. does this ever happen to you? is there a special vitamin you take to make sure you can keep carving? I don't like Randall the couch potato I like Randall the Wood carver |

When I feel like that, Randall, I take a walk in a place that inspires me, or I listen to music that does the same.

Don't worry Randall, it happens to the best of us. Sometimes it is nice to walk away for a little while and then let the creative juices start flowing again. To get back into it I usually go to Woodcraft and look through some carving books that might interest me, or start a project that might challange me. WCI is also a great inspiration. No reason to force it....just don't quit for good!! Good Luck my friend! Blake |

I just looked at your profile! Your just a young whipper snapper! You burned yourself out! You've got to learn moderation or to paraphrase something that was told to me when I was your age, "You've got to carve smarter!" Blake and Dianna both had some good thoughts on getting the juices flowing again!

I wished mine was only from the first of NOV. Mine has been since April. Looked at my tools today and walk on past them. Did do some cutting out Ginger bread men for the little bride with the scroll saw. But carving, nope, not a slice. Maybe it has been all of the sawing of wood for the little bride's kitchen cabinets that caused me not to carve. But that project is over with. Maybe after the first of theyear.

I have had that happen for a few months at a time, the best thing I found is selling a carving like a bark house or a wood spirit after that all of a sudden I want to do nothing but carve. That or take a look in the galleries, books, or a carving magazine. Hope this helps ya, Carl

I take that time to sharpen up all my knives! Get em good and sharp - sometimes that alone makes me want to try them out. If that fails, I think of something that I have never carved - and sit down to do it. For instance, if you always carve caricatures, sit down and do a chip carving or don't be that drastic - sit down and do a bear or other animal - maybe in the caricature style. I don't know, it works for me - give it a try.

My wife says I am A.D.D. , but I don't pay attention to her when she says that! I personally have to ask myself why I am carving. I do a lot of scroll saw work to. For me, when it becomes a chore or work, I stop wanting to do it. I didn't start carving because I was looking for a job! My wife(and I love her dearly) is great at ruining my desire to carve. The first time I carve something for someone, she starts turning it into a job. "You should carve something for everyone for Christmas!" Now maybe I am just little bit rebellious. Personally, I would rather take the trash out when it is my idea, than to do it because my wife tells me to . It is the same with carving. I do it for me, and then I enjoy giving it to others. All that to say this. When I find myself burnt out on carving, it is because it has become a chore and not a hobby, and who wants to do chores anyway!Mark |
