John,
I'm glad that you found some inspiration in my book as that is what it's all about. It's difficult when you are fairly new to carving to create original pieces but I suggest that you keep changing little things like the way the hat is carved or the hands or the robe or the face, etc. As you progress, you will find a certain nose that pleases you or a certain look to the hat or the robe and all of a sudden one day, you'll be doing your own version of Santa. When I carve, it is seldom that I use a sawed out piece or a pattern. I prefer to do my work without any drawings at all. I do use some photos for reference but it is alot more fun to let the carving develop on it's own.

If I can be of any help to you, don't hesitate to drop me an email.

May your tools stay sharp and your bark cooperative.
Rick Jensen a.k.a Bark Boy

Keoma, I agree, this thread has become a great read. I also agree with the sentiment that there has to be a love of the craft or go elsewhere. We all know the money is nice, and for some of you a livelihood, but if money ever takes over you can have all the designs and all the style you want, you are a much shallower person for it. Your generosity, Keoma, is a reminder to me not to hang on to the things of this earth too tightly, we aren't taking them with us anyway. A generous heart is a great joy than a miserly one.

Lynn, I know how you feel, my mom and dad visited this weekend. It is always fun to show them the work. They are so appreciative and encouraging.

Thanks Rick for the encouragement and the offer of help. Will keep at it. My dad helped me reorganize my work shop and to repair and refurbish an ancient wood working bench - two wood-screw vises and all. I am looking forward to working at it soon.

God Bless

John/ K Karver
