Default Derby Winner

If any of you have ever been to watch a horse race, I'm sure you have noticed the funny little outfits that the horse jockeys wear. Their jackets are decorated with a lot of circles, diamonds, and bright colors and they ride horses with strange names like Barbaro and Smarty Jones. I attempted a caricature of a horse jockey that just won the derby. This is off of Arnold's pattern of the Scott Boys, and I can bet that none of the Scott Boys ever rode in a horse race....maybe racing to the steel to get moonshine, or into town to have a gun fight.

I'm entering this into the Johnson City show this weekend and it is the first attempt at carving the head and hands separate, as well as adding a base. He has his whip in one hand and his cash in the other and stands about 12 inches tall. Let me know what you think!

Thanks for taking a look! Everyone try to come to Johnson City this weekend if you get a chance!

Blake

Blake .... I just got in from a 16 hour day and got on and saw this .. What a great looking guy Blake ... I like the look and I really like your colors ... Love those big blue eye's .. They just add to the caricature .. You did a good job of carving the figure separate .. you cant tell it .. and the whip and money let us know he's a winner ... Great job .. I'am sure Arnold will be proud of this one ... Have a good time at the J.C. Show and bring us back a ribbon ...
God Bless

I like him Blake.... definitely see the "Scott boys" resemblance, but you've made it all yours. Nice touch with the money and whip.

Great looking character, Blake. The only thing I'd suggest adding is a darker-green-painted $ on each corner of the stuff in his hand, just to make it obvious to the most casual observer what he's got.

Thanks for the suggestion Claude, I will definitely make that addition before I take him to the show. I was having a hard time trying to figure out if I should put any detail on the bills. I will post another picture after it is completed.

Also, thanks for the nice comments! They are very much appreciated!~

Blake

Blake, Nice job. I like the theme/subject. I also agree with the $$ idea. How tall was the carving? Looks to be about 12" high....

Very nice Blake. I think the paint and finish are very much in tune with the carving. I like a lot. But then I like all your carvings. Tom H
