Default Current Caricature Carving

Hi all,

So, what caricature are you guys currently working on?

I'm currently doing a salesman type character that will be a gift for a friend who is a realtor selling our house....he'll get the gift once he sells the house of course. Wink

The character is standing there with a suit on with a brief case in one hand and his other hand outstretched as if to shake someones hand. I'm not too happy with the mouth. I tried to copy one of the mouths from a Pete Leclair book and I don't like how it turned out.

Also had a bit of trouble with the hand (darn cross grain) and hope to finish adding a new hand soon.

Oh well, I'm learning and I guess that's what matters.
Mike

Nice gesture Mike on waiting for the house to sell before departing ways with the new carved fellow! That should add some extra incentive.

I admit that I'm not much of a caricature carver and mainly do the walking stick and totem pole carving thing. However, occasionally I do wander into other carving forms but that is the exception and not the rule for me. As for mistakes, like you, I too make quite a few but like I always teach the kids in my vocational woodshop class... there are very few mistakes that can't be fixed and these carving blems should open new doors for opportunity, as you will see from my latest caricature carving below:

Sometime last fall I began working on a nice pattern of a cowboy named "Cowpoke Charley" from Bill Higginbothams' book entitled "WHITTLING" off and on as I was in the mood, then finally finishing the basswood piece in January of this year. As for mistakes (or windows for opportunity to improve upon) I felt that I carved the cowboys behind much too flat, but then I began to like it! So I hope that Mr. Higginbotham isn't too upset that I decided to rename his design "Flat Butt Bill"!!

Sometimes mistakes can become the main focus of a carving and who but only me will know that is was not intentional?!?

I don't see anything wrong with your carving Bob. Matter of fact, It is a great looking cowpoke. Maybe his butt got that way from rideing his horse to much. Rode enough to know a horse can bounce your butt upwards.......
and when you land............. well ya can get a flat butt fir sur.

there are no mistakes in caricature carving-just changes in design.
