| | Re: Cowboy running from something Whatsthat, looking good, seem to recall suggesting something along these lines back when you first posted the picture of the rough out.
Yep I'd suggest some rails , maybe two sets of rails at right angles, give the impression of a Bull rider heading for safety after getting bucked off.
Thanks for showing your progress. .

| | Re: Cowboy running from something Lots of action going on there!! Here's a few suggestions you might consider being as you ask:
Forget the rails...they would only take away from the action. Don't think you have the room for them on your base anyway. If you give him a Bull-Rope with a bell on it the viewer will know he's a Bullrider. Don't forget the cinch around the Bull's flanks or the glove on the rider's left hand.
I've attached a couple of photos of a similar piece I did a few years back using Rodeo Clowns. When you do your base don't use sand. It would be much too rough a surface for the scale of your scene. Find you a country road and get a bucket full from the roadside and sift it through some old panty hose a couple of times. That will give you just the right material to use. Paste it down with ModPodge. Check out the scenic segment on the Chuckwagon Cook project at www.outwestwoodcarving.blogspot.com. That will explain how to do it. Make sure you use a different platform to do the scenic area. I fear it would really make a mess if put on your nice looking base.
Again, these are only suggestions.

| | Re: Cowboy running from something Thank you all for your suggestions. Lynn I appreciate you sharing your pictures. I am planning on putting the ropes and cynch on the bull I will work on the glove as well. I like the idea of a rope with a bell as well.
I did buy a seperate 1/4" base plate to mount everything on. I will review your site as well to learn the technique of putting "dirt" on the base.
Again, thanks for all the help. Now the fun stuff is left.
Greg

| | Re: Cowboy running from something If you are going for more realism, then the sleeve rolled up on the gloved hand is quite common a sight as well. .

| | Re: Cowboy running from something Well, here is an update. The base is done, may add a few rinkles to make it look like the dirt has been kicked up. I will be woodburning in the final details and I may add a scarf to the cowboy.
Has anyone added a scarf after the carving was done? The head is superglued on without a post. I am thinking of cutting the head off, putting in a post and while the head is off adding a scarf.
I will add some brads to the chaps with some leather fringe hanging from them. I need to darken the belt around the bull's rear end. Any ideas how to make new leather look old?
Lynn O. Doughty: I will still be adding the bell to the rope and he has a glove now. Thanks for the panty hose trick! I appreciate all the tips you have on your blog. Still hope to swing by your shop this year. Will be in Joplin, MO. a couple more times.

| | Re: Cowboy running from something Well, having trouble finding time to work on this pc. I have started the painting but still have some detail painting to do.
Trying to decide if I want to paint the bull to look gray and blackk, I am also thinking about brown on top and Black on the feet, head and tail. Not sure.
As always feedback welcome.
