Default Cowboy running from something

I have been thinking about this carving for a while. I will keep updating as I progress. First part is to get the cowboy running, next part is to finish what he is running from!

Whatsthat,

my 2cents

from his back leg being straight, looks like he's brased for a hard time!...

could easily be turned into a cowboy or 49er trying to get a bawking over packed mule or stubborn packhorse on its way by pulling on the harness.

looks like a good shape to start with for a runner as well. maybe running from a big bull with it's head down in full charge!.

Looking good so far, Thomp raises a good point.

Greg. Here's 2 cents more. In cartoons a running figure has it's legs forward of the body to indicate speed. Thomp is right as long as the figure has the rope over the sholder and the animal is behind the figure. The animal would have it's legs braced forward toward the cowboy. Just draw a wide "V" and you can see the action of the two figures with the left side being the cowboy and the right being the animal. Hope thats understandable. Good luck whatever you decide.

Whatever he is running from, it looks to me like he is about to trip on a rock or some such. Check that left leg, it looks like it just caught, and the fella doesn't realize yet he is going to trip.

Looks more to me like he's pushing on something...the South end of a North Bound mule or wagon wheel?

Also could be a pirate making a stab with a boarding pike!

Glad you are all having fun! I have the full plans already drawn, however I must admit that a few of these ideas are tempting...

I really like the stuborn horse/mule idea.... The plans as they stand right now are to do a scene where the cowboy was just bucked off a nasty bull, and the bull has taken dead aim at him.

I may change though, or perhaps I will do more than one.... I am having a heck of a time cutting under and arround his arms and I really don't know how I am going to carve his face. With his arms raised I really can't get to the face. I guess I could cut his head off and do that part seperate. That would allow access to his chest area.

How do you all do those tight places?
