| | The Country Doctor Here's a nice little scene of a Country Doctor on his way to a house call. While the wagon box is wood I made the bonnet out of cloth which I coated with a 50 percent solution of shellac and then put it on a wire frame. The front mud guard is also made from the same material on a wire frame. While they don't show up to well the springs on the front and back were made from brass stock along with the axles.
I'm always amazed when I see one of these buggys. They are so fragile. Just a little wooden box setting on a few metal rods. |

| | Re: The Country Doctor "Amazed" is the correct word. This is amazing work.
May I ask if you're using a 50% mix of shellac, what's the other 50% ?
And did you make those wheels? Wow!! |

Knowing you to be a stickler for detail, I didn't expect anything less from you. You raised the bar high and we don't expect anything less.

| | Re: The Country Doctor Yes..I made the wheels. Through a lot of experimentation I came up with a method that allows me to turn the out without too much difficulty. Maybe someday I'll explain it.
The Shellac is just cut with alcohol. I get a nice piece of cottom sheeting fabric, iron out all the wrinkles, dip in in the mix and then hang it up to dry. Once it's dry I lay out the pattern and cut away. I just used a tab system to fold the fabric over the wire frame and used contact cement to hold it in place. I painted the inside a beige color as the normal black was just too dark. The outside is black and then everything was dirtied up to make it look used. Did that on the wheels too.
The harness is made from a leather womens coat I bought from Goodwill years ago. It's very thin and worked out great.
I did this piece a number of years ago but thought it might be of interest. I have a Surrey with the Fringe on Top being pulled by two Snow White Horses that still lack the figures from Oklahoma, Laurie and Curley to show up. One of these days I've got to finish that piece. |
