Default Corner to Corner Caricatures?

I recently came across an old issue of W.C.I. that had instruction on carving a hunter (mine turned out to be a fisherman.) Anyhow, it was cut using a square block and one of the 90 degree corners was the center of the face.
Although you can't really cut a blank using this method it is pretty easy to identify bottom of nose, chin, top of boot, etc. with notches,, the corners make built in centerlines, and the head and body (from a top view) fit very nicely from corner to corner. I found that I could cut the same figure on a 2"x2" block that would take a 2"x3" block using the "face on a flat" method.
Question is, does anybody know of a book that teaches this method? I hope this description is clear enough to be understandable. I notice that a lot of carvers make wind spirits on the "corner."
Thanks,
Van

Most carvings done on a stick are done that way.

For example, here are some study sticks

Fox Chapel Publishing - Woodworking books and magazines for the inspired woodworker

You will also notice that some will carve the front corner to get a round working surface first to draw the face. You can also round the other 3 corners and keep the front corner for the nose.

I found some tutorials on the Corner Cut Faces by searching the web...

Try: Beginners Carving Corner and Beyond
and scroll down to Carvin' The Tiny Santa!

For a Santa on the corner: Carving Instruction

I couldn't find all my references... Was it out on YouTube???

Sorry. Hope this one helps.

Merry Christmas~

I just noticed this answer from Claude in that thread that I find very interesting...

Question for Mike Shipley

I like to work from templates, and I always wondered how to use a flat face template to a corner template...

I did catch a good video on carving a woodspirit using this meathod on youtube . It was a good 2 part series called " how to carve a simple woodspirit " . It was very easy to follow . He used a "carving jack " , I was able to do some right after watching the video with my tools . It also showed a nice way to "antique" when finishing which I still use on a lot of stuff . It was by "hillsnholler" . There are several on here that have great tutorials on there also . Tons of info . here .
