| | Chief Bear Claw - Finished Here he is in all his paint and glory!! Turned out pretty nice. Really like the necklace effect. Going to have to do that again on a full figure.
There are more photos on the blog once I get them uploaded.

Hanging down from the white circle on his necklace is what appears to be a couple of leather thongs; the same thongs hang down from Brushy Bill's neck, also. Do you use actual leather for these, or carved wood that is then glued on? I think these small touchs are what make your carvings so unique.

| | Re: Chief Bear Claw - Finished Those leather thongs are made from flattened wire. They'd break off if they were wood and leather just doesn't work. |

Have you ever spent any time looking at Dave McGarry's bronzes? |

| | Re: Chief Bear Claw - Finished Steve...We took a tour of his studio loading area in Ruidosa a few years back. It was Saturday and for some reason they were closed. Got to see a lot of pieces just in from the foundry so we could count all the welds, etc. Amazing stuff but really pushing the envelope as far as sculpting goes. Did you know that to get the beaded effects he buys beaded strips from Asia and then embeds them into the wet clay? Hmmmmmm. Lots of western sculptors are now copying his methods, i.e, Marie Barbara. Spent some time watching her work in Santa Fe last year. They way I figure, if they can get away with trying new and possibly controversial methods there's no reason we can't too. |
