Default Chess set for Uncle Carl

Some here may remember I had been working on a chess set for my Uncle Carl. I had given him the army side last summer. I had planned on giving him the Navy side 1 Oct 09. Uncle Carl passed away 21 Sep 09.

Aunt Edie asked for me to complete the set for him anyway. She said he carried those little soldiers all over Memphis.

I sat down many times to carve the Navy. I sat them aside so many times, just because I could not see to do the work. Well, with the anniversary of his passing approaching a fire was lit under my backside. I started whipping out Sailors left and right.

I was delayed from my set date of 21 Sep 10 for completion. A friend asked for a Marine for an old Vietnam vet who is coming up on a serious surgery in which the outcome is in doubt. I know uncle Carl would understand the delay.

I am attaching the army side again, just for refreshing memories. I will ask Aunt Edie to take a picture of them all together when they arrive.

So, for my Grandpa Kemp and Grandpa Davis who were on the high seas against the Imperial Japanese... For my Uncle W.A. and Uncle Finn who were in the Army in Europe against Germany... For my father-in-law who was in the Korean War... for my Aunt Edie, whose brother, Jerry L. Fields, was killed in Vietnam (2 Jun 66), my Uncle Carl who fought the NVA and VietCong ... my shipmates from the Gulf War period... and all other veterans. This is a project in your honor.

Joe
