| | Re: Carving Magazine Article Well, put me down as one who kind of likes it. I think Ivan Whillock's article in each issue is worth the price of admission in itself. Everything else is gravy. What I don't care for is the step-by-step stuff where you take your 1/4" #5 and do such and so, the take you 3/8" #9 and do this. I'm pretty sure i'm in the minority on that one though. But, I'll pay the price of admission just for Whillock's ariticle. I shouldn't admit it, but I've spent a lot more on a lot less.
I just wish they'd get their distribution straightened out. The mule still hasn't arrived. |

| | Re: Carving Magazine Article I am another who enjoys Carving Magazine. I take the four (U.S.) carving magazines (are there any more specifically related to woodcarving?) and would not like to be without any of them. Actually, if I did have to cut one out it would be the oldest Chip Chats. Now, there is a magazine where I find very little reading material. I do like the pictures of carvings, but all of the info on who won what, at what show is of little interest. Although I am primarily into bird carving, and do almost no caricature, I like to read about how carvers go about producing their pieces. Even the simple ones. |

| | Re: Carving Magazine Article Hugh,
That was yours? I said I liked the issue before this week's and the chickadee was one of the things I really liked. It (and the article) were really good. Congrats on being published with such a good project.
Guys, please don't take me wrong. I'll keep my subscription to the magazine along with the other 3 that I get. They just don't have the consistent quality that Wood Carving Illustrated has. I'm hoping they'll get everything running like a well-greased machine. The more good carving publications we have, the easier it will be to spread the message of carving.
And Paul, I agree about Chip Chats. There's not much "how to" stuff in it--just lots of pictures of carvings across the land(s). I like the regular contributor's articles--woodburning, woodburners, etc.--letters, and show results. When I'm getting ready to carve something new, I'll thumb back through them to see how other people have approached the same subject. Hopefully, there is a place for all the carving magazines and they will all thrive so we can learn more, too.

| | Re: Carving Magazine Article Thanks Donna, it is my article on the Chickadee. The picture of the bird didn't seem right though. the head seemed flat in the photo, and it was in reality a well shaped carving. The magazine paid me well for the article, and asked for two more that I did and were accepted. I thought Marnie did a good job in presenting the article. It was more interesting to me than the ads I enjoyed doing the articles, and hope to be able to do more. |

| | Re: Carving Magazine Article I enjoy all the carving magazines, I subscribe to both and I pick up a couple more when I can find them, but though some are better than others, I find I learn something from each.
Hugh's article on the Chickadee for example.....well written, beautifully illustrated, great step by step process, just a great article. More than just enjoying the article though, I respect his sharing his gift of his craft with us! Taking the time to show us how we too can create something as beautiful as a delicate little bird, encouraging others to share the joy that he experiences in creating his carvings. In life, his carvings are even more impressive, pictures don't do them justice! I am proud to have one of his creations here at home, a beautiful Merlin and it stands to remind me how truly gifted Hugh is!
The magazines show me what wonderfully gifted carvers are out there, some of their work is awe inspiring! Simply blows my socks off! While I understand that I'll never be able to carve as well as some of these fine carvers, it does give me something to strive for, helps me learn, and makes me a better carver. I carve for enjoyment, relaxation and therapy, not for competition or for cash, and I'm quite happy in being a serious amateur. I know my limits and while I continiously challenge them, I can live with them!

| | Re: Carving Magazine Article Hugh - I grabbed my binder of the magazine (I keep all my old magazines neatly stored in 3 ring binders - year after year for some of them) and found your article. I'm embarrassed. I apologize.
That shows what happens when somebody approaches something with a pre-conceived notion. I flipped through that magazine and filed it away. I didn't even see your chickadee. I missed a great article and a great bird. I'm happy that you pointed it out and I've seen it and can learn from it. I've learned other things too.
Congratulations on being published -- I'll be LOOKING for the future articles. |
