Default Carving Magazine Article

In the latest issue of Carving Magazine Issue #9 pages 45 & 46, Chris Whillock describes the Emil Janel carving he purchased on Ebay.

He writes that it is called "The Money Changer".

The actual title is "The Paymaster"; Emil related that this was typical of logging camp paymasters he had known.

Sorry, had to do it after the issue 8 fiasco. Shouldn't have, knowing that it's not the magazines fault, but the printer, but just couldn't resist.

As to Emil Janel, have never been able to figure out the difference between "exagerated realism" and caricature. I guess it's a more refine caricature??? Beats me, but the closest I've been able to come.

P.S. If any of y'all get the urge to buy any of that Tennessee basswood, DON'T. Bought a bit to evaluate and after a month or so of fiddlin' with it have decided it isn't even fit for firewood. I'll stick to Minnesota and Wisconsin from now on, thank you.

Ed
As you know I live in a small town in Texas. When I first moved here; all i heard was we do things differently here. office told me that too. Took forever to start getting my mail. Sometimes I wouldd get it and sometimes i wouldn't.
I have been down to the post office several times and complained. Last time I was super mad. master started telling me how people had beem sick and on vacation and he did not have people to cover the route. He wanted to give me the carrier's name and phone # and wanted me to call and talk with the carrier.
That really got me going. I told him that he was in charge and to get off his *** and run the route himself. Told him that I had been down there several times and that this was the last time I intended to discuss it with him and that if I had any more problems that I would be going over his head to his superiors.
Since that day a couple of months back, my mail service has been great. I now even get the sales flyers in my mail. Wasn't even getting those before.

Sounds to me like you had a lazy carrier and the post master was covering for him.

I love carving magazines, but I continue to be disappointed by the new carving magazine. The quality of projects and editorial content has declined further. I know Marnie has been ill and I've heard the whole project is struggling. I have some friends that are panelists for it, and I feel bad when a whole issue kinda falls flat. The last issue had a few projects that weren't just for beginners and they were pretty good. This time, there just wasn't anything in it I was inspired to try.

When I get a carving publication, I scan through it quickly and then within the next 2-3 days, start reading it from cover to cover. It's been a LONG while since anything interested me enough to go back to it to further read anything.

On the positive side: it has several beginner projects and lots of ads. That's about it. I know this is just one person's humble opinion, but it makes me sad that it hasn't reached a quality level.

Am I missing something?

Just got mine today pony express to Canada is slow. I have to agree with Donna the magazine is certainly going down hill. Maybe I am a little bias but WCI is the #1 carving magazine. I dont know what the problem was with issue #8 but I still havent recieved mine. Too bad I signed up for two years. Oh well live and learn I say as long as we have WCI and this message board life is good. Donna I agree whole heartedly about not wanting to read it twice I read it through today and probably wont pick it up again.

Now Maybe Others Will Speak Up ??????? ... Dan...

Pretty complicated thoughts here ..... IMHO I'm not certain we should be using one magazine message board to be discussing another magazine BUT that magazine is a carving issue and this board is for discussing carving, right?
I, too, have been disappointed with the other magazine and haven't found much of interest for a long time. Because of all the advertisements, one could suppose that the income is there to support better articles and projects. The ads are more interesting than the articles -- but I think that might be good in the short term for a new publication ??????
I like magazines. I'll renew if it's offered so I should keep quiet.

It's better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Send Marnie an email and you will get #8...I had one become lost in the mail or wherever and they sent me one after I told them about it.
