Carving caricatures from scratch -LeClair question
Hello all, I'm fairly new to carving and I'm attempting to work on my first caricature. I bought the book by Pete LeClair, "Carving Caricatures from Scratch". It is an excellent book with wonderful instruction and photos. My only question or confusion is that he doesn't mention what size block of wood to use. No where in the book does he state what size to use. I bought a 2'' wide by 12'' long block. I think it's too big. Either that of my knife is too small. Anyone have any recomendations? Thanks for the replies.
Re: Carving caricatures from scratch -LeClair question
I have and like that book. I think that Pete deliberately doesn't include dimensions. I've seen his work and he does all sized figures. 2" squared x 12" is a pretty big piece of wood for me. I usually like 1-1.5" squared x 6-8" but I am FAR from being an expert. I'm still very much a novice.
Re: Carving caricatures from scratch -LeClair question
The carving that I have, that Pete done, he did on a 1 1/2 x1 1/2 x 6. You may want to start with this size, but feel free to play around with the size, it's only wood.
Re: Carving caricatures from scratch -LeClair question
pete does use alot of different sizes, but mostly uses 1 1/4 square and 1 1/2 square about 6 inches long. he didnt include the size because the figures can be done from any size block, hope this helps
