| | Re: Carved all weekend Thanks everyone, I really had a good time carving.
For folks waiting for me to finish their knives, sorry, I needed a break.
Gary,
I am working on a female hobo and have been for about a year.
VA,
I have a mailing list of customers whom I notify when I complete a new carving, several are patiently waiting for new carvings to add to their collections.
Some customers send me pictures and would like hobo carvings of themselves. This was one of those carvings, and explains why it sold immediately.

That is so nice to hear. I can see why you have a waiting list for your carvings. They are really outstanding.

| | Re: Carved all weekend Mary,
Collectors are unusual people, they will pay for a carving because of the name it has on the bottom rather than the artistic merit of a piece.
While I enjoy carving, there are many who carve much better than I do.
The difference is, I have collectors who think my carvings are the cats meow; that is why my carvings sell. Not because they are better, but because a handful of folks love them.
Also I have little time to carve which makes my work less available. There are wonderful carvers who can and do put out a new carving every couple days.
That is not necessarily bad, but it creates a surplus of that artists work; making it less desirable to collectors. That only matters if you wish to sell your carvings.
The Trygg family of carvers sold tens of thousands of carvings from 1910 to 1984. There are still so many of those carvings available, that their actual value has not increased. They are fun to collect, but you can't expect a financial return on collecting them.
Probably more than you wanted to know, but I felt like typing.

| | Re: Carved all weekend Excellent Rick! Back when I worked I had it down to every weekend was for what I wanted to do. Of course I had to want to paint the house, clean the gutters, weed the garden, mow the grass, visit relatives, etc, etc. No kidding you really do need to spend more weekends just carving.
