Sure will. You need to consider writing a hobo caricature book and selling it for like $12.95. Some of the books out there are better than others. I know you have a grasp as to what carvers want in a book.

I was getting ready to say some smart alecky thing like, "Why carve one when you can buy one?" but don't think I will.

I probaly posted this in the wrong area, but having problem.. and topics appropiate,.,

Ive been inspired and tried a hobo.. with assories

problems; im having is in small details like the fingers.
As this little feller is 2x2x4" basswood ... maybe im treating the wood to rough but its not cooperating, maybe? my knives arnt as sharp as i think they are, but it's like the wood is pulverized and just wont cooperate with the knife,,,

i know that isent the proper verb-ology? but best i can splain it...

another question.
if using super glue to stabilize such places, will it cause any problems when i coat it all with linseed oil? problems ? like making the superglue fail or discolor?

It sounds to me like your wood is to dry and you need to ad moister. I'm sure others on here know a whole lot more than I do about it but you may try wetting the area you want to carve for awhile with a wet or damp cotton ball. Mike

thomp - if you carved that from 2x2x4 ......... wow.
I'd like to see what you can do when you aren't having problems.
I think he looks great.

try misting with rubbing alcohol, you can mix 50 50 with water if you wish....I just use straight alcohol.....but in your case maybe the water will make it stay damp a little longer?

That looks like an exceptional piece, and if it is only 2x2x4 INCHES and not FEET, getting detail like fingers on a carving that small seems to be quite an accomplishment in and of itself. I think I'd try a more stylized hand and not one so detailed for a work of that size. It really looks great, to me!

Thanks to all for the fine comments,

Emil Janel's hands on his carvings inspired me to start making fingers not the mitton looking hands i was making, Although i think i read he used alder wood and kept it soaking wet until he carved it? what is alder wood?
I just cant get away from the fat heads....

the hobo was a on and off again, one week project, its been in my head longer, but got some new chizzles and reworked them to start the hobo project..

Now i need to carve a fire for him to roast his wiener... and some buddies to share the beans with..

i Agree when making small carvings details are harder to control when fingers are smaller than a grain of rice and a slip of the blade will remove 3 of them...
