Questions ;in order to do cariture carvings a band saw is needed to rough out image`s ?
If I send a pattern front ,side and back is it possible to have someone cut it and at what cost ?

Bandsaws are not required. If it's a small carving, say out of a 2 x 2 x 6 inch piece of basswood, just carve off the excess. In the time it would take to set up the bandsaw, adjust the tension, do the cutout, release the tension, etc., you'd have most of the waste carved off. You can also saw it out with a coping or fret saw by hand. If the stock is less than 2 inches thick, you could use a saber saw to cut away the waste. Bandsaws can be very useful and save a lot of time on thicker wood, but are still not required. Someone skilled with a mallet and a good-sized gouge can quickly remove waste wood.

Claude is right, a band saw is nice but not a must. May I suggest that you check out Jack Prices book:
http://www.littleshavers.com/All_Books/20175.jpg

His figures are almost all carved from a 1 x 2 stick. No need for a band saw, just a side profile pattern and you carve it from there and after about 10 steps or less you don't even need the pattern any more. It really helped me ....especially the basic face.

Also check out Gene Messers videos:
In the last pages there are several projects carving from a block of wood... most of his figures are from 1 1/4 square by 4- 5 inches.
Hope this helps.

Corey

A bandsaw is a great tool that you will use and use and use. I have used mine for well over 25 years and it's still going. It would be a good investment....Myron
