Has anyone else (besides me) had trouble getting the face proportions right in golf-ball carving. I don't seem to have that trouble when I start out with a square block of wood. : |

| Piney, I had that problem when I first tried carving golf balls; I found that I need to go much deeper to get somewhere near a good face. Obviously, getting an egg shape from a round ball is difficult. : : : : : : : : : : : |

Piney, you did take the cover off first, didn't you?

Pineyknot, I don't have the answer, but I do have a question. Do you use your GOOD carving tools on those golf balls, and do they dull your tools quicker than wood? I've never carved one , but I've seen them at shows. I was also wondering if there is a market for them? |

:P You can use good tools on golf balls but DON'T use your woodburner unless you like the smell of burning rubber! Also, they don't fly quite as straight after you carve them. Granted, the way I play golf, it's kinda hard to tell, but that's what they tell me.....

I don't know how big the market is, but I know carvers who sell all they can carve. The price is $15.00 - $35.00 each; which includes a base and golf tee. Some are sold on a keychain; seems a bit heavy to me. They are so simple to carve, that I normally give them away as thank you gifts. They need some sort of support to hold the ball in the proper position. I made one into a doll with a cloth dress and bonnet. |
